AUSTRALIA
AUSTRALIA
Although the first vines brought over from South Africa
in 1788 by Governor Phillip of the NSW Penal colony
failed to yield any wine, later settlers, with considerable
perseverance gained more success and by the 1820’s
Australian wine was already winning awards.
Australia is now one of the world’s largest wine exporters,
with world famous brands producing great value every
day drinking wines alongside venerable, older producers
and smaller, artisan wineries. The diversity of climate
and geography enables producers to grow a rich
variety of grapes in a wide array of styles.
IN THE KNOW
Specific Region
Conditions in South Australia are perfect for growing the classic French
Rhone varieties with Syrah/Shiraz being particularly successful and with
a well-established reputation. The focus in recent years has been to produce
more premium quality wines and regions such as the Barossa Valley and
McLaren Vale are quickly gaining a reputation for world-class wines.
Oz’s strict quarantine laws have protected them from the dreaded
Phylloxera, so the region boasts some of the oldest Vines in the
world producing wines to rival the world’s best.
“Age is just a number.
It’s totally irrelevant unless, of course,
you happen to be a bottle of wine.”
