You might be surprised to learn that wine is
made all over the world. According to the UN’s
Food and Agriculture Organisation there are 73
wine producing countries, with most European
nations contributing, as far west as Ireland and
as far north as Sweden. Riesling from Germany,
Grüner Veltliner from Austria and Tokaji from
Hungary are world renowned and central and
eastern European nations such as Romania,
Bulgaria and Georgia are gaining a reputation
for great value table wines.
North Africa has a long history of winemaking,
linked to the influence of the Roman Empire.
Chateau Musar in the Lebanon has established
itself as a world class producer of wines from
French varieties utilising the unique terroir of
the Bekaa Valley. There’s Ice wine from Canada
and Tannat from Uruguay, not forgetting
China, who are one of the world’s largest
producers. Japan, Peru, Israel and many others
cater for their own domestic markets, but you
might be lucky enough to sample some of the
small amounts exported. There really is
a whole world of wine to discover.
