When Californian wines went up against some
of the great French Chateaux in a blind tasting in
Paris in 1976, a Napa Valley wine won each category.
The French were surprised, to put it mildly, but the
rest of the world sat up and started taking notice.
Wine is produced in every state, but California is
responsible for 90% of production with some of
the world’s best-known brands dominating.
There are many smaller winemakers producing premium
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and unusual
blends which demonstrate the region’s diversity of climate,
topography and winemaking imagination. States such as
Oregon and Washington also produce high quality Pinot
Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.
